NUTELLA

A TV report from Arte on 27 july, explains that the well-known NUTELLA contains phtalate which is considered the most dangerous: the DEHP which has been detected by a Federal Environment Office.
The Ferrero Society (manufacturer of Nutella) acknowledge its presence in its products but minimize its toxicity.

The DEHP phtalate is already prohibited in the toy industry, considered dangerous and will be completely prohibited in Europe by the end of 2012. But until then, it will be found in common food products.
Phtalates are acting like a hormonal decoy, provoking hormonal disturbances, like sterility among men. Ingested by pregnant women, these poisons reaching the foetus hinder its testicles development.
It also brings about an atrophy of the testicles responsible later in life for a reduction of spermatozoa production.
A study in Germany among 600 children shows that 100 % had traces of phtalates in their body.
Among all of the children were found 5 phtalates and for 20 % of them these phtalates were found in toxic level.

Phthalates crept into widespread use over the last several decades because of their many beneficial chemical properties. Now they are ubiquitous, not just in the products in which they are intentionally used, but also as contaminants in just about anything.
About a billion pounds per year are produced worldwide.
Intentional uses of phthalates include softeners of plastics, oily substances in perfumes, additives to hairsprays, lubricants and wood finishers. Food industies, etc.
Considering the accumulation and cocktail effect of the phtalates, it is probably 80 % of children which are ingesting unreasonable amounts of phtalates.

Precision : The DEHP phtalate is found in the plasticizing agent the widest used in the Asian food market. Yet numerous packings are nowadays coming from China, bringing with them this dangerous plasticizing agent in Europe.
This substance is so risky that even in China it has been prohibited to use in food and fodder industry.

Nutella contains per tablespoon 100 calories and more than 5 grams of fat, about half of which come from saturated fat. Thus, Nutella contains dangerous level of saturated fat, in a form of non-hydrogenated palm oil, which is the second most used ingredient to prepare Nutella.
There's also far too much SUGAR in Nutella, and no mention of this in the TV adverts when they're suggesting it's suitable for children!

If you actually read the label on the back, you'll find the ingredients list: sugar, palm oil, hazelnuts, cocoa, skim milk, reduced minerals whey, lecithin as emulsifier, vanillin artificial flavor.

The whey powder of Nutella, is of animal origin and therefore not suitable for vegetarians.
Whey is one of the components which separates from milk after rennet (a byproduct of veal production) is added. Natural calf rennet is extracted from the inner mucosa of the fourth stomach chamber (the abomasum) of young calves. Meaning that whey from animal making it unsuitable for vegetarians. The colouring used is also of animal origin.
